[TOP TEN TUESDAY] Books I Meant to Read In 2018 but Didn’t Get To
Top Ten Tuesday is all about books – sometimes non bookish things – and a top 10 list. It was created by The Broke and the Bookish in June of 2010 and was moved to That Artsy Reader Girl in January of 2018. It was born of a love of lists, a love of books, and a desire to bring bookish friends together.
How it works:
That Artsy Reader Girl assigns each Tuesday a topic and then I have to post my top ten(or 2, 5, 20, etc.) list that fits that topic. This week’s topic is:
I was already working on an article in which I wanted to talk about 2018 reads; the ones I didn’t read, debut novels and more so I’m glad with this week’s topic because this way I can divide things a bit more.
There were quite a lot of books that I wanted to finish reading in 2018 but haven’t gotten around to do so. A lot of those books ended up on my Beat the Backlist tbr for this year, so I’m hoping to get around to read some of them in 2019.
It was hard narrowing it down to a list of ‘only’ 10 books haha but I succeeded. I’ve focused on 10 books that were on the top of my tbr list last year and which I’m really excited about to finish hopefully soon!
Nevernight by Jay Kristoff
Ugh, I’m so so frustrated with myself about this book. I’ve started it twice, LOVED it twice, but somehow I’m never in the right mindset long enough to finish it?! What the hell is wrong with me? You should think that it wouldn’t be such a struggle to finish a book that you really liked reading so far, right? Well, apparently it happens to me. Not only with Nevernight though. Lots of books that I’ve started reading, loved and haven’t finished yet, somehow… Epic fail! So… hopefully this year I’ll finally finish reading Nevernight!
Strange the Dreamer by Laini Taylor
And another one I started reading, but haven’t finished yet. I am obsessed with this author’s writing but somehow I still haven’t read Strange the Dreamer and I should be ashamed of myself for calling myself a Laini Taylor fangirl. I’ve been wanting to read this book ever since Laini announced it some years ago, and in the meantime its sequel is out already as well. And.I.Still.Haven’t.Read.Them. Ugh… Epic fail yet again.
Evenfall by Gaja J. Kos & Boris Kos
I was so over the moon happy when I received an arc copy from the authors for Evenfall. I started reading it soon afterward too and really liked it so far. But I wasn’t in the right mood for this book so I ended up putting it aside and I am so bummed out about that.
It feels so ungrateful towards the authors since I really wanted to read and review this one before its release in October 2018, ugh. So this one has definitely a priority this year and I hope I get around to finish reading it soon! I cannot wait to see how this story continues!
Furyborn by Claire LeGrand
I should be ashamed of myself. I received an e-arc almost a year prior to the release of this book. I started reading it on my Kindle and really looooved what I’ve read so far. But then I got into a kindle-reading-slump (Yep, from time to time I just can’t focus reading digital books) and put it aside again. In the meantime, it’s many months after the release of this book. I preordered a copy – a stunning HC with deckled edges – because I just knew when reading the arc that I needed this epic book on my shelves, but somehow I never got around to finish it yet! So, I’m planning to start anew in 2019 with this one and hopefully finish it! I have a feeling this is going to be a favorite book of mine, so I can’t wait to see if I’m right.
Reign of the Fallen by Sarah Glenn Marsh
A book I was so excited about before its release but somehow I just haven’t felt excited to pick it up when it got here haha. I keep hearing good things about it, but we’ll see whenever I get in the mood to read it. I still want to read it though, so putting it up on this tbr list is just a good motivator I guess.
the Last Empire by Brandon Sanderson
And another book I started reading, loved so far, and haven’t finished yet. This is becoming a ‘thing’, lol. And the not having finished yet part isn’t because I don’t like it, but I just always seem to start reading it when I’m not in the right mind-set you know? This bums me out so much because I really liked what I’ve read so far of this world and can’t wait to see how this story will unfold.
Legend by Marie Lu
I own like 5 or 6 books by this author and haven’t read a single one yet :O I should be ashamed of myself, lol. I received a stunning hardcover box of the Legend trilogy from my husband some years ago and even though I’m super curious and excited about this trilogy, since I’ve heard great things about it, I just somehow never seem to get around to start reading it. Hopefully this year!!
the Surface Breaks by Louise O’Neill
Mermaids are one of my all-time favorite mythical beings and I am obsessed with little mermaid re-tellings. So when my husband bought me this book for my birthday I was over the moon happy about this. I never planned on having it on my shelves unread for so long – since September ’18 – but yet I still haven’t read it. Hopefully soon! I’m so curious and excited about this one.
the Burning Sky by Sherry Thomas
This trilogy has been on my shelves for many years now and still holds my interest a lot. But as with every other book on this list, I just haven’t gotten in the ‘right’ mood yet to finally start it I guess? Hopefully soon! I have all books in this trilogy in my collection, so I’m able to binge-read them all, if I end up loving this first book of the Elemental Trilogy.
Before she Ignites by Jodi Meadows
I received this beauty from a friend of mine for my birthday and I am really excited about it. This author has been on my wishlist for so long now and I’ve read the Lady Janies books in which she writes alongside 2 other authors, but I haven’t read a full length book she has written by herself. This book sounds like such an intriguing read and I can’t wait to read it!
I’m quite positive though that I’ll be finishing a lot of these books this year because I’m really motivated to finally finish a beat the backlist challenge – something I failed miserably at last year hihi. #HaveToStayPositive.
And all of these books are ones I’m so excited about, so for the love of all that is holy… Let’s hope I’m able to get into the right ‘mood’ to read them.
Are there any books you planned on reading in 2018 but never got around to do so? Love to hear from you and thanks for reading!

I read both Strange The Dreamer and The Surface Breaks and I was not the biggest fan of both. Strange The Dreamer was very complicated, but thankfully it will be translated to Dutch in May. I will try that one again when the time comes. The Surface Breaks felt very shallow and it was just an overall disappointment. I stil have to read Furyborn though.
By the way, did you know that your WordPress follow button is invisible?

Sorry to hear you didn’t really like both. I am a huge fan of Laini Taylor’s writing so That’s what I’m looking forward too most actually haha. But I have to be in the right kind of mood for it as well. I love complicated books like hers <3 Didn't know it was going to be translated, that's cool! They translated the first two books of her Daughter of Smoke and Bone trilogy as well, but the third never happened. That's such a shame. It's one of the best series I've ever read!
I'll try not to get into the surface breaks with too many expectations. I've heard mixed things about the book so far but we'll see 🙂

I’ve only read a YA trilogy of his yet, the Wreckoners, which I really liked! I’ve been wanting to finish the Final Empire for so now long and I’m so bummed that I just don’t seem to get around to do it haha. Hopefully this year!! If you’re up for a buddy-read for one of his books for example, let me know! I also have Skyward on my shelves, still waiting to be read hihi.

Ok stop everything right now! Grab Nevernight and Strange the Dreamer right this minute and start them. Both are on my Holy Grail of Books. So much goodness (well maybe not goodness lol).

*looks guilty…
I’m looking into buddy-reading strange the dreamer somewhere in March maybe, so hopefully I’ll read it then! And Nevernight is also so high upon my tbr but my mood has been so chaotic lately. Laini Taylor has captured my heart and soul with Daughter of Smoke and Bone – it’s one of my all time favorite series – and I’m sooooo excited about Strange the Dreamer!

LOL, I think I fangirl over Legend an average of… once a week? LOL. So you can probably guess which one I think you should read first ;-). I don’t own the series in hardback though, but I’m thinking of getting a second hardback copy of the set so I can loan out my paperbacks without getting anxious. Anyway, this year would be a great year to read them since Legend 4 is coming out this fall.
Strange the Dreamer is great too. That and Muse. I haven’t read any of her other books, but Daughter of Smoke and Bone was on sale a couple weeks ago and I picked up a copy of that.
