I can’t really remember when and where I came across this tag so please let me know if you tagged me for it and I’ll give you a mentioning! I think this book buyer tag looks really interesting and so I couldn’t pass up on writing and publishing it.
I’ll be answering questions like where I buy my books from, if I pre-order books and many more. There’s a total of 13 questions! Happy reading!
Where do you buy your books from?
Most of the time, I buy them online. When I buy online there are basically three shops I visit on a regular base;
- Bol.com, which is a large Dutch webshop that has a great collection of English books
- the Bookdepository, where I often buy because of their great prices and I love the fact that they add a bookmark to the order every time as well
- Amazon.de, from which I buy 95% of the self-published authors books, because the bookdepository and bol.com shops don’t sell them most of the time. I also buy some book outlet Germany books once in a while because they sell books at such great prices that I just can’t resist haha.
I do however buy books from stores as well though, whenever I visit one that has a good collection. I don’t have any stores nearby though with an English collection and it’s just not doable to order all of the books I want through a store since I always have to call them then for each book, they’re more expensive than online, and I have to take my car to pick them up so it’s just a hassle really. But whenever I’m visiting a city that has a bookstore, I’ll always pay a visit and buy something in 98% of the cases haha.
Do you ever pre-order a book and if so do you do this in store or online?
I pre-order books on a monthly base haha. There isn’t ever a month passing by in which I don’t receive at least 1 pre-order. I love pre-ordering books because I like receiving highly anticipated books asap so I can read them asap after delivery If I wanted to. And often the price of a pre-order book is cheaper and if I know for sure that I want a certain book in my collection, this is just a nice bonus I think! And I always order them online because all of the bookshops in the area don’t have any English books so I have to order them every them by calling them and then use my car to drive and pick them up, so ordering online is just a bit more convenient hihi.
On average, how many books do you buy a month?
Haha, that’s quite a confronting question, lol. It depends.. I’ve had months in which I went to thrift stores for example and then my haul would go up to almost 40 books a month. I’ve had times in which I bought ‘only’ 5 or so. But most of the time, I think I buy an average of 10-15 books per month? including books I receive in book boxes.
I don’t really have any other hobbies besides reading anymore that cost me a lot of money – not like the time when I’ve had my own horse for example… that was quite expensive, lol – so buying books is basically The thing now that I spent my money on, lol. Nothing wrong with that I think. Buying and receiving books makes me happy so yeah… I do love buying merchandise and stuff like that as well, but books are always my first priority whenever I have some money to spent hihi.
Do you use your local library?
Actually… I haven’t been to a library in years! I should be ashamed right? haha. Well, there’s just so much to read from my own shelves and on my Kindle that going to the library just isn’t necessary. Maybe in a couple of years, when my son’s old enough to properly read, I’m going to make him a member and then I’ll probably come across some books for myself as well. But for now, I have more than enough books on my (digital) shelves to keep me busy 😉
If so- how my books can you/do you borrow at a time?
So this isn’t a question I can really answer right now haha. When I was younger tho, I always maxed out! lol. I always came across so many books that I wanted to take with me. And I always ended up being late when returning them – I failed so bad in returning them on time, lol.
How do you feel about charity shop/secondhand books?
I definitely buy them from time to time but mostly through online webshops tho. Most of the thrift stores in the area barely have any English books and I don’t buy that many Dutch books anymore since I prefer reading English most of the time. But I bought a lot of books at thrift stores in the past.
I mostly buy secondhand books whenever I’m looking for a book that isn’t in print any more. Or sometimes when I’m prowling on a site like Amazon and come across a secondhand book that’s amazingly priced… I can’t stop myself then either haha.
Do you keep your read and TBR pile together/on the same book shelf or not?
Most of my shelves consist of READ books and TBR books indeed. On all of the 4,5 bookcases that I have standing in the living room there’s 1 on which I have a separate shelf for TBR books. Some 1st books in series I still need to start are to be found on that shelf. But most of the time I prefer putting the books on the shelves by genre instead of by read/unread.
Do you plan to read all of the books that you own?
Yes! And once in a while I go through my unread books and resell or gift away the ones I don’t plan on reading anymore. So most of the time, all of the unread books on my shelves are ones I definitely still plan on reading in the (nearby) future.
What do you do with books you that you own that
you feel you will never read/felt you did not enjoy?
I put them aside and then ask some of my friends if they’re interested in reading them. If so, I’ll send the books to them. If not, I give them away one way or another or sell them if they’re newly bought books that I haven’t read yet.
Have you ever donated books?
I have donated a lot of my Dutch books to a secondhand shop in the area and as I said above, I give books away to friends etc. once in a while when I declutter my shelves haha.
Have you ever been on a book buying ban?
No and I don’t think I ever will be. I hate buying bans to be honest haha! I would feel miserable if I wasn’t able to buy any new books anymore. Buying new books is something I love so much and even though my tbr is out of control, I don’t see myself choosing to uphold a buying ban. That would make me feel miserable and it just wouldn’t work for me!
I think it’s admirable if someone chooses to suffer themselves through one and also succeed in not buying anything. But It just wouldn’t work out for me and that’s okay tho. Each their own, right?
Do you feel that you buy too many books?
Ehm… well… What do you qualify as ‘too many’? hihi
But no, not really. I’m quite selective to what I buy and what I buy is something I’m really curious and excited about. Sure, my tbr is out of control and there are more new books added to my shelves each month than what I manage to finish reading of my tbr. This is partly due to the fact that I love to re-read and therefore don’t always manage to finish a new to me book as fast as I could’ve finish them but that’s okay. I’ll get to them eventually 🙂
Some of you might say I Do buy too many each month but it’s a personal thing really. One may think buying 5 books per month is already a lot whereas others easily buy 20 books per month so it depends on who you ask I guess haha. Looking at my average haul, I think my newly bought books is just the perfect amount, lol.
So, answering these questions was definitely quite confronting from time to time haha!
