[MONTHLY RELEASES] Looking forward to May’s YA book releases!

It’s always so much fun, looking forward to next month’s releases. There are quite some YA releases in May that I’m super excited about, so my wishlist has grown a lot because of this haha.

In this article, I’ll first share my most highly anticipated releases and then I’ll be also highlighting some releases that I didn’t put on my wishlist, but might be interesting for you guys as well. Happy reading!

Dark Skies by Danielle L. Jensen
(Dark Shores #2)
Sub-genre: Fantasy
Release date: 5th

I love Danielle’s writing so much and am always looking forward to a new release by this author. Everything I’ve written by her has been amazing. Dark Skies is the second installment in the Dark Shores trilogy. It’s not a typical sequal but it’s a companion novel, so it’s set around ‘new’ characters and I really cannot wait to dive into it. I got an e-arc recently so I’ll definitely be reading the book before it’s release. I also put in a pre-order copy to add the Hardcover edition to my collection. Danielle has an awesome pre-order campaign going on, so if you’re planning to get a copy of this book, be sure to check out the campaign and you’ll be able to receive some awesome swag!

Lydia is a scholar, but books are her downfall when she meddles in the plots of the most powerful man in the Celendor Empire. Her life in danger, she flees west to the far side of the Endless Seas and finds herself entangled in a foreign war where her burgeoning powers are sought by both sides.

Killian is Marked by the God of War, but his gifts fail him when the realm under the dominion of the Corrupter invades Mudamora. Disgraced, he swears his sword to the kingdom’s only hope: the crown princess. But the choice sees him caught up in a web of political intrigue that will put his oath – and his heart – to the test.

With Mudamora falling beneath the armies of the Corrupter, Lydia and Killian strike a bargain to save those they love most—but it is a bargain with unintended and disastrous consequences. Truths are revealed, birthrights claimed, and loyalties questioned—all while a menace deadlier and more far-reaching than they realize sweeps across the world.

Forged in Fire and Stars by Andrea Robertson
Sub-genre: Fantasy
Release date: 5th

Game of Thrones meets an Ember in the Ashes? Say no more. ME WANTS IT. The Loresmith aspect of the story line (as you can read down below in the synopsis) sounds really interesting and I’m curious to find out Ara’s role in this story. It was the beautiful cover that initally drew me in, but the synopsis looks really great I think and I couldn’t just not put in a pre-order for this beauty. Really excited to receive this book!

Forged in Fire and StarsGames of Thrones meets An Ember in the Ashes in this action-packed fantasy from the internationally bestselling author of the Nightshade series.

Ara has always known about the legend of the Loresmith: the blacksmith who served alongside the kings and queens of every generation to protect the kingdom. It was her fate to inherit the title–though she never truly believed it would come to pass since the monarchy’s downfall years before.

But when the lost Princess Nimhea and Prince Eamon steal Ara from her quiet life with a mission to retake the throne–and take her place as the Loresmith–her whole world turns upside down. Their journey will take Ara on a dangerous adventure to discover new truths about her family’s legacy, and even to face the gods themselves. And with a mysterious thief as an unexpected companion, Ara must use all her skills to figure out just who she can trust, and forge the right path forward–for herself, her kingdom, and her heart.

From internationally bestselling author Andrea Cremer comes a gorgeously written new fantasy series perfect for readers of Leigh Bardugo’s Grishaverse or Sabaa Tahir’s An Ember in the Ashes series.

The Mermaid, the Witch and the Sea
by Maggie Tokuda-Hall
Sub-genre: Fantasy > Pirates > LGBT
Release date: 5th

A new fantasy with pirates? Count me in! The title and cover lured me in right away and I just love the synopsis and the promise of this story. Can’t wait to find out for myself what I’ll think of it. I haven’t had the chance to put in a pre-order, but it’s definitely on my wishlist now waiting to be bought – hopefully soon!

The Mermaid, the Witch, and the SeaA desperate orphan turned pirate and a rebellious imperial daughter find a connection on the high seas in a world divided by colonialism and threaded with magic.

Aboard the pirate ship Dove, Flora the girl takes on the identity of Florian the man to earn the respect and protection of the crew. For Flora, former starving urchin, the brutal life of a pirate is about survival: don’t trust, don’t stick out, and don’t feel. But on this voyage, as the pirates prepare to sell their unsuspecting passengers into slavery, Flora is drawn to the Lady Evelyn Hasegawa, who is en route to a dreaded arranged marriage with her own casket in tow. Flora doesn’t expect to be taken under Evelyn’s wing, and Evelyn doesn’t expect to find such a deep bond with the pirate Florian.

Soon the unlikely pair set in motion a wild escape that will free a captured mermaid (coveted for her blood, which causes men to have visions and lose memories) and involve the mysterious Pirate Supreme, an opportunistic witch, and the all-encompassing Sea itself.

Aurora Burning by Jay Kristoff & Amie Kaufman
(Aurora Cycle #2)
Sub-genre: Science Fiction
Release date: 6th

Aurora Burning is one of my most highly anticipated releases this year. Book 1 was really great and I’m so excited to continue the story/adventure of these amazing characters. I preferably want to do a re-read of book 1 first. Hopefully soon so that I can read Aurora Burning asap as well. In order to not spoil for when you’ve not read Aurora Rising, I’ll add the synopsis of book 1 down below!

Aurora Burning (The Aurora Cycle, #2)The year is 2380, and the graduating cadets of Aurora Academy are being assigned their first missions. Star pupil Tyler Jones is ready to recruit the squad of his dreams, but his own boneheaded heroism sees him stuck with the dregs nobody else in the Academy would touch…

A cocky diplomat with a black belt in sarcasm
A sociopath scientist with a fondness for shooting her bunkmates
A smart-ass techwiz with the galaxy’s biggest chip on his shoulder
An alien warrior with anger management issues
A tomboy pilot who’s totally not into him, in case you were wondering

And Ty’s squad isn’t even his biggest problem—that’d be Aurora Jie-Lin O’Malley, the girl he’s just rescued from interdimensional space. Trapped in cryo-sleep for two centuries, Auri is a girl out of time and out of her depth. But she could be the catalyst that starts a war millions of years in the making, and Tyler’s squad of losers, discipline-cases and misfits might just be the last hope for the entire galaxy.

They’re not the heroes we deserve. They’re just the ones we could find. Nobody panic.

House of Dragons by Jessica Cluess
(House of Dragons #1)
Sub-genre: Fantasy > Dragons
Release date: 12th

I haven’t finished reading Jessica’s other series yet, Kingdom on Fire, but that isn’t necessary for me to know that I love her writing and want to add more books by her to my TBR. This first book in a new fantasy series looks so promising! Can’t wait for this one to be delivered – I put in a preorder for it.

House of Dragons (House of Dragons, #1)Five royal houses will hear the call to compete in the Trial for the dragon throne. A liar, a soldier, a servant, a thief, and a murderer will answer it. Who will win?

When the Emperor dies, the five royal houses of Etrusia attend the Call, where one of their own will be selected to compete for the throne. It is always the oldest child, the one who has been preparing for years to compete in the Trial. But this year is different. This year, these five outcasts will answer the call….

THE LIAR: Emilia must hide her dark magic or be put to death.

THE SOLDIER: Lucian is a warrior who has sworn to never lift a sword again.

THE SERVANT: Vespir is a dragon trainer whose skills alone will keep her in the game.

THE THIEF: Ajax knows that nothing is free–he must take what he wants.

THE MURDERER: Hyperia was born to rule and will stop at nothing to take her throne.

The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes
by Suzanne Collins
(The Hunger Games #0)
Sub-genre: Dystopia
Release date: 19th

I truly loved the Hunger Games a lot and I thought that Snow was quite an interesting character. I was intruiged right from the start, when I heard that this book was being written and coming our way. I haven’t had the chance to pre-order it yet, seeing I already maxed out on my pre-order count for May haha. But this one has definitely made it to my wishlist!

The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes (The Hunger Games, #0)It is the morning of the reaping that will kick off the 10th annual Hunger Games. In the Capitol, 18-year-old Coriolanus Snow is preparing for his one shot at glory as a mentor in the Games. The once-mighty house of Snow has fallen on hard times, its fate hanging on the slender chance that Coriolanus will be able to out charm, outwit, and outmaneuver his fellow students to mentor the winning tribute.

The odds are against him. He’s been given the humiliating assignment of mentoring the female tribute from District 12, the lowest of the low. Their fates are now completely intertwined – every choice Coriolanus makes could lead to favor or failure, triumph or ruin. Inside the arena, it will be a fight to the death. Outside the arena, Coriolanus starts to feel for his doomed tribute… and must weigh his need to follow the rules against his desire to survive no matter what it takes.
