If you haven’t finished reading Lord of Shadows yet, book 2 in the Dark artifices trilogy, and you don’t want to get spoiled, then you should skip this one. The synopsis of the book and the first paragraph will give away quite a lot of what happened at the end of Lord of Shadows, things you probably don’t want to have spoiled if you still need to read it.
The reason I decided to go ahead with this book in this Friday Firsts – even though it’s a possibility that some of you might not want to read it because of spoilers – is for all the shadowhunter fans who haven’t been able to purchase/start reading Queen of Air and Darkness yet but would love to get a little sneak peak. So I thought to give you a little taste of what’s to come with this Friday’s Firsts!
What kind of article is Friday Firsts?
It will feature the first few sentences/paragraph of my current book and my first impressions as well. It’s meant to be a quick and easy way to share a bit about what I am reading, and I would love to hear others join in sharing their current reads as well.
The format is really simple. Include a quote. Include first impressions, it will not be a long drawn out analysis of the text or grand speculation of what is to come. Just a brief overview of how I’m feeling about the beginning of the book.

About Queen of Air and Darkness:
Dark secrets and forbidden love threaten the very survival of the Shadowhunters in Cassandra Clare’s Queen of Air and Darkness, the final novel in the #1 New York Times and USA TODAY bestselling The Dark Artifices trilogy.
What if damnation is the price of true love?
Innocent blood has been spilled on the steps of the Council Hall, the sacred stronghold of the Shadowhunters. In the wake of the tragic death of Livia Blackthorn, the Clave teeters on the brink of civil war. One fragment of the Blackthorn family flees to Los Angeles, seeking to discover the source of the blight that is destroying the race of warlocks.
Meanwhile, Julian and Emma take desperate measures to put their forbidden love aside and undertake a perilous mission to Faerie to retrieve the Black Volume of the Dead. What they find in the Courts is a secret that may tear the Shadow World asunder and open a dark path into a future they could never have imagined. Caught in a race against time, Emma and Julian must save the world of Shadowhunters before the deadly power of the parabatai curse destroys them and everyone they love.
First Paragraph
DEATH LOOKS DOWN
There was blood on the Council dais, blood on the steps, blood on the walls and the floor and the shattered remnants of the Mortal Sword. Later Emma would remember it as a sort of red mist. A piece of broken poetry kept going through her mind, something about not being able to imagine people had so much blood in them.
They said that shock cushioned great blows, but Emma didn’t feel cushioned. She could see and hear everything: the Council Hall full of guards. The screaming. She tried to fight her way through to Julian. Guards surged up in front of her in a wave. She could hear more shouting. “Emma Carstairs shattered the Mortal Sword! She destroyed a Mortal Instrument! Arrest her!”
She didn’t care what they did to her; she had to get to Julian. He was still on the ground with Livvy in his arms, resisting all efforts by the guards to lift her dead body away from him.
“Let me through,” she said. “I’m his parabatai, let me through.”
“Give me the sword.” It was the Consul’s voice. “Give me Cortana, Emma, and you can help Julian.”
First Impressions
My first impression of reading this first paragraph is: I’m feeling too much! I wasn’t expecting to being thrown back right into the middle of this horror fest. Right in the middle of where we left of in Lord of Shadows. But what on earth did I expect then? For Clare to spare my feelings, go soft on us and skip the hard and emotional parts of what happened at the end of Lord of Shadows? *starts laughing hysterically. Yeah right, like that’s ever gonna happen! Like Clare is going to go soft on my feels, nuhuhh…
But seriously: this book starts off so strong! It has sunken its claws in you before you even know it, and then you’re well and truly lost yet again, as always when reading a Clare book – that’s my experience anyway haha. There’s no escaping it anymore now. I’ll have to endure… That’s basically how I experienced reading the first few chapters, when the tears kept coming… when they were streaming down my face to embed themselves there forever – yeah Melissa, stop being all dramatic, you’re thinking, right? Well, go read the book and come tell me this again and you’ll see for yourself that there are tears to be found on your cheek as well, I promise. Livvy is gone. The Blackthorns and Emma; how on earth will they all survive this loss? The loss of this beautiful brightly shining star. And there’s probably a lot more loss coming our way and a lot of fights left to fight before there’s proper time to grieve dear Livvy.
I’m currently at Chapter 11, page 213, and boy o boy! There is a lot going on in this book so far! So much is happening at once and there are so many paths to follow in this story-line. Everyone is struggling in his/her own way, fighting the fight in whatever whey they can. And wether that’s just by trying to survive, trying to find answers or literally trying to fight their way out of a dangerous situation; there’s no rest possible for each and every one of them. It’s like the problems are never-ending at this point and you feel like they’ll never be able to fix it all. It’s so palpable at this point; the change that’s upon this world, not for the good, and it has me feeling so scared and anxious. Yeah, the anticipation is high at this moment! I have almost 700 pages left to go now, so we’ll see what’s going to happen soon enough then. The slogan for this book is “The Shadowhunter world will never be the same again” At this point, I think it’s not being mentioned in a good way. Lets hope I’m proven wrong, but there’s a dark cloud hanging over our precious characters so it’s hard to stay positive at this point, lol.
What are you reading right now and did it start out good or not? What are your first thoughts about your current read? Love to hear from you.
