[DOWN THE TBR HOLE]

In order to clean out my Want To Read list on Goodreads, I decided to give this a try by writing the Down the TBR Hole article. This article was originally created by Lost in a Story and a lot of other bloggers are publishing it as well so you might’ve already come across it here and there. I always like reading those Down the TBR Hole articles and hopefully you’ll like to read it over here on my blog as well.

books shade| HOW DOES IT WORK? |

Go to your goodreads to-read shelf.
 Order on ascending date added.
Take the first 5 (or 10 (or even more!) if youre feeling adventurous) books. Of course, if you do this weekly, you start where you left off the last time.

Read the synopses of the books

Decide: keep it or should it go?

books shade| THE BOOKS |

It’s really fun to see which books I’ve added to my to-read list so long ago and to find out how I feel about them now, all those years later. Since I’ve only been using Goodreads actively since 2014, there aren’t any books I’ve added prior to 2014 obviously.

In the prior 4 editions I got rid of .. books already so that’s a good start, right? Only I’ve added some new books to my tbr as well lately so I suck haha. In this Down the TBR Hole article I got rid of some books yet again, but there are definitely some I want to keep too and hopefully buy and read sometime soon.

a Great and Terrible Beauty by Gemma Doyle (Gemma Doyle #1)
Genre: YA, fantasy, Historical fiction
Added to GR in: April 2015

In this debut gothic novel mysterious visions, dark family secrets and a long-lost diary thrust Gemma and her classmates back into the horrors that followed her from India. (Ages 12+)

It’s 1895, and after the suicide of her mother, 16-year-old Gemma Doyle is shipped off from the life she knows in India to Spence, a proper boarding school in England. Lonely, guilt-ridden, and prone to visions of the future that have an uncomfortable habit of coming true, Gemma’s reception there is a chilly one. To make things worse, she’s been followed by a mysterious young Indian man, a man sent to watch her. But why? What is her destiny? And what will her entanglement with Spence’s most powerful girls—and their foray into the spiritual world—lead to?

I still think this synopsis is incredibly interesting but I don’t think I’ll get around to buy and read this book anytime soon since it’s not one that I’m THAT interested in, you know?

Schermafbeelding 2018-11-21 om 19.19.43I am Number Four by Pittacus Lore (Lorien Legacies #1)
Genre: YA, fantasy, Science Fiction
Added to GR in: April 2015

Nine of us came here. We look like you. We talk like you. We live among you. But we are not you. We can do things you dream of doing. We have powers you dream of having. We are stronger and faster than anything you have ever seen. We are the superheroes you worship in movies and comic books–but we are real.

Our plan was to grow, and train, and become strong, and become one, and fight them. But they found us and started hunting us first. Now all of us are running. Spending our lives in shadows, in places where no one would look, blending in. We have lived among you without you knowing.

But they know.
They caught Number One in Malaysia.
Number Two in England.
And Number Three in Kenya.
They killed them all.

I am Number Four.
I am next.

This is a book I was really excited about years ago but now I really don’t care about it anymore, oops? I really like the concept of this world though and maybe I’ll get back to it someday but for now, I’m feeling good deleting the book from my to-want list.

Schermafbeelding 2018-11-21 om 19.19.43Where she Went by Gayle Forman (If I stay #2)
Genre: YA, contemporary romance, Fiction
Added to GR in: April 2015

It’s been three years since the devastating accident . . . three years since Mia walked out of Adam’s life forever.

Now living on opposite coasts, Mia is Juilliard’s rising star and Adam is LA tabloid fodder, thanks to his new rock star status and celebrity girlfriend. When Adam gets stuck in New York by himself, chance brings the couple together again, for one last night. As they explore the city that has become Mia’s home, Adam and Mia revisit the past and open their hearts to the future – and each other.

Told from Adam’s point of view in the spare, lyrical prose that defined If I Stay, Where She Went explores the devastation of grief, the promise of new hope, and the flame of rekindled romance.

This is a book I was really excited about years ago but now I really don’t care about it anymore, oops? I really like the concept of this world though and maybe I’ll get back to it someday but for now, I’m feeling good deleting the book from my to-want list.

The 5th Wave by Rick Yancey (the 5th Wave #1)
Genre: YA, science fiction, dystopia
Added to GR in: April 2015

After the 1st wave, only darkness remains. After the 2nd, only the lucky escape. And after the 3rd, only the unlucky survive. After the 4th wave, only one rule applies: trust no one.

Now, it’s the dawn of the 5th wave, and on a lonely stretch of highway, Cassie runs from Them. The beings who only look human, who roam the countryside killing anyone they see. Who have scattered Earth’s last survivors. To stay alone is to stay alive, Cassie believes, until she meets Evan Walker. Beguiling and mysterious, Evan Walker may be Cassie’s only hope for rescuing her brother-or even saving herself. But Cassie must choose: between trust and despair, between defiance and surrender, between life and death. To give up or to get up.

I’ve been wanting to start reading this series for so long now, but somehow I never get around to actually do it. I saw the movie and I really liked it, which had me curious about the book as well. I know the reviews on the books are quite diverse, but I’d still like to find out for myself what I’ll think of this book!

Dead Witch walking by Kim Harrison (The Hollows #1)
Genre: Urban fantasy
Added to GR in: April 2015

All the creatures of the night gather in “the Hollows” of Cincinnati, to hide, to prowl, to party… and to feed.

Vampires rule the darkness in a predator-eat-predator world rife with dangers beyond imagining – and it’s Rachel Morgan’s job to keep that world civilized.

A bounty hunter and witch with serious sex appeal and an attitude, she’ll bring ’em back alive, dead… or undead.

Even though I completely forgot about the existence of this book… After reading the synopsis again, I feel like I still want to read this book. It looks be a really interesting one! So I can’t get rid off it, hihi.

Across the Universe by Beth Revis (Across the Universe #1)
Genre: YA, Sci-Fi, dystopia
Added to GR in: April 2015

A love out of time. A spaceship built of secrets and murder.

Seventeen-year-old Amy joins her parents as frozen cargo aboard the vast spaceship Godspeed and expects to awaken on a new planet, three hundred years in the future. Never could she have known that her frozen slumber would come to an end fifty years too soon and that she would be thrust into the brave new world of a spaceship that lives by its own rules.

Amy quickly realizes that her awakening was no mere computer malfunction. Someone—one of the few thousand inhabitants of the spaceship —tried to kill her. And if Amy doesn’t do something soon, her parents will be next.

Now Amy must race to unlock Godspeed’s hidden secrets. But out of her list of murder suspects, there’s only one who matters: Elder, the future leader of the ship and the love she could never have seen coming.

This is a book I have on the shelves and it’s one of the few SciFi books on my shelves that I haven’t read yet. I’ve come to love the genre so so much over the years and this is still a book I’m really curious about. I just haven’t gotten around to read it yet, yikes haha.

| CONCLUSION |

Out of these 6 books, 3 will GO and 3 will stay. I’m quite happy with this end result! I really feel like I’m getting somewhere haha. There are at least 2 books I’ve managed to get rid off each time so far, so yay for me!

Have you read any of the books on my list? If so, should I change anything about the choices I made, you think? Maybe I removed one you think I should put back on my tbr? Love to hear from you. Thanks for reading and have a nice day!

I need to do this. Especially as I have just added 2 books off this list onto my TBR. I really like the sound of Dead Witch Walking.

haha yeah I’ve been doing quite well with removing books from the TBR, but in the meantime there are books being added to the tbr as well on a daily base so it’s hopeless really, lol. Dead witch walking sounds indeed quite interesting I think. I totally forgot about that book until I was looking into my to read list again, lol.

Across the universe was actually the first scifi book I liked! I hope you’re going to like it if you ever read it. I wanted to read I Am Number 4 years ago when the movie came out but now I don’t think I’d be interested in it.

    1. melissasfandomworld

You make me even more excited now to read Across the Universe! I love YA Sci-Fi, so I have high hopes for this one. And I’ve experienced the same with I am number 4. This happens to my quite often; adding books to the tbr and then coming across them some time later and not being interested anymore haha.

This is a great idea. My TBR on Goodreads is overflowing and I don’t even know what all books I have added to it. I too was really excited to read I am Number Four when I first saw the movie a few years ago. But I don’t think I’m ever going to actually read it anymore.

    1. melissasfandomworld

Thank you! I’ve added all of the books I wanted to read in the future to my Want-To-Read list on Goodreads so those are a lot of books I don’t even own yet so I can more easily get rid off them now, since I don’t own a copy for most of them 🙂

ahh thank you, that’s so nice to hear!!
It’s funny to see how I’ve forgotten about many of these books over time and that with some of them – when reading the synopsis again – I lost interest now and with some of them I’m experiencing things like ‘Wow, why haven’t I bought this one yet?’ lol. These are all books that were added to my to read list years ago so it’s fun to come across these older books again.

I understand.. sometimes when I see my TBR, I think why I had added that particular book..lol.. But you are gutsy.. I wouldn’t dare to mess with my TBR.. I believe it to be a sentient being!

    1. melissasfandomworld

haha thanks for the reply! but I just Have to do something about it. When coming across books now that I know for sure I’m not interested in anymore for example… it’s just a shame to let them stay on my Want to Read list on Goodreads because it’s just way too chaotic that way. Most of these books are books I don’t own yet so getting rid off them from my Want to Read list, is more easily because of that, I think 🙂
