[BOOK REVIEW] Scarlet Mark by Lexi C. Foss ((Cavalieri Della Morte))

My 9th Lexi C. Foss book and this author keeps continuing to surprise me! This was my first ‘darker’ written book by her. I didn’t really know what to expect of it up front, seeing the many warnings I got by Lexi saying it was Really dark haha. I excitedly started reading it and was surprised in the best way possible!

Every new book I read by her is a new HIT for me, this one being no exception! This dark romance left me aching more (as has become tradition when finished reading a book by this author)

Deceit requires punishment.
But what happens when the mark is innocent?

Killian “Dagger” Bedivere

My latest assignment has evolved into a game of deciphering whom to trust—the renowned politician who hired the Cavalieri Della Morte, or the runaway bride?
She’s gorgeous, conniving, and everything I crave in a woman.

She’s also my target.

Rule number one: Never fall for the mark.
Rule number two: Fuck rule number one.

Amara “Scarlet” Rose

I never wanted this world, but the decision wasn’t mine to make. I always belonged to him. Now there’s a new player on the board—one hell-bent on destroying all my plans.

He’s lethal, handsome, and everything I should fear.

Rule number one: Don’t trust anyone.
Rule number two: Do everything you can to survive, even if it means breaking rule number one.
And rule number three: When in doubt, kill.

Trigger warning; It can become quite intense and there may be some rape/abuse elements written into it. Mostly, it’s only talked about though but I know that can also be more than enough of a trigger for some. There are a couple of scenes in which it can become really dark, so if you aren’t up for that and these elements are a trigger for you… YE BE WARNED.

Scarlet Mark was deliciously dark, intense and sexy. I loved loved loved the morally gray characters and how Lexi let them balance on the edge and sometimes even let them fall over a bit. I mean, they do some really nasty shit hihi but I just freaking loved it?! *psycho alert hahaha* These characters really love their blades and aren’t afraid to use them. I loved how Lexi combined the dark elements with her, as always, awesome story telling and amazing writing.

“This man I hardly knew, this assassin sent to retrieve me, had me panting beneath his hands after a few mere strokes of his blade.”

I am in love with the set up of the entire book. The killing spree these two main characters go on eventually to seek their revenge was so frigging awesome and well written for example. The settings and scenes were interesting, sometimes scary even and felt so realistic. My highest respect to this author on how she handled writing about this all so well! More evidence (not that it was needed because when you’ve read even 1 book by Lexi, you’re truly lost in the best way possible) that Lexi is capable of writing Anything!!! I love falling down her bookish rabbitholes and can’t wait to dive into more of these kind of dark holes created by her hihi.

Character wise I, love Killian and Amara so much. It was funny to see how determined Killian is for example, to not fall for her, but still does, the poor sap hahaha. He says he definitely isn’t the knight in shining armor and boy is he wrong. He definitely is, in his own dark and twisted way and it was such a frigging joy to read about him. I am thankful Lexi wrote from both pov’s because it really adds more depth to Killian’s character as well. He is intense, lethal and sexy AF. What more could a girl want? Right?!!! I’d definitely let myself being sliced up by this sexy f*cker haha! He could do anything he want with me if he called me his Kitten, purrrrr.

“If things go south and you get hurt or caught, it’s not on me to save you.
I’m an assassin, not a knight in shining armor.
So don’t ever mistake me for the hero. It will get you killed. Got it?”

I love love love Amara’s development in the book. She has suffered and endured so much in her life so far, much more than anyone should have to experience in 1 lifetime (10 lifetimes isn’t even enough). And her battling her way out of her former life and getting out of it so much stronger, with a bit of help from Killian, was just amazing to experience. I am in love with the dark side of her and it’s just a joy to see her letting it come out to play. A perfectly balanced out character. A warrior <3

“The terrors would never leave me;
they were what gave me a reason to fight,
what bolstered my tough spirit today.
Using those nightmares made me stronger.”

I love how Killian and Amara find their way together and develop this really intense and interesting romance in which not much is conventional. These two are such a great match *jumps up and down from excitement* I loved exploring the more darker romance scenes (it’s so refreshing) and I think Lexi did such an amazing job on everything, including the addition of those dark elements to it all, without it becoming overwhelming.

“I understood her in a manner few others ever would. Maybe because I lived in a world of death and she flirted with the realm daily throughout her life. Maybe because we were meant to find each other. Maybe because we offered each other an escape from reality. Regardless, her trust in me was an aphrodisiac that stirred a yearning inside me no one else had ever evoked.”

This book was a really refreshing read. One in which things are happening that show us the most darkest parts of the world and I really liked delving into it, even though it could be brutal to read sometimes about what was happening seeing it felt so real.

Lexi wrote down settings that provided me with goosebumps all over my body (in the best ways possible) because of the intensity and ‘wrongness’ of it all. Her story telling is just utterly amazing and awe-inspiring and it hits me right in the feels, every single time.

I was hooked from the start. I got sucked in and held on for dear life, coming out amazed on the other end. It was, as always, so so addictive and I really don’t think this author is able to disappoint me. No matter what she writes, and I’ve read almost everything by her up to this point, she always lures me in and makes me fall in love with her and her writing even more so. This book leaves me wanting more more more! Safe to say I recommend it to anyone who loves a dark read!

Scarlet Mark by Lexi C. Foss is one of 13 books in the Cavalieri Della Morte Series. It’s a collaboration series by 13 authors who each wrote a story set in this dark and brutal world. I have yet to read the other books in the series, so for me this was a standalone book. I am so excited to read the other books though. I’d definitely recommend looking up all the authors who worked together on this huge project!

Thank you for reading!
