[ARC BOOK REVIEW] Starbreaker by Amanda Bouchet (Endeavor #2)

Soooo, where to start with summarizing my reading experience of Starbreaker, this magnificent romantic and action packed space adventure, the 2nd installment in the Endeavor series and the long awaited sequel to Nightchaser? Curious to find out what happens next with Tess, Shade and her crew after that action packed and thrilling ending of Nightchaser? Let me tell you a bit more about it then. Starbreaker is the long awaited, expectations exceeding and perfect answer to that question! What a thrill this book was to experience – a perfect reading experience. Don’t you just love it when a sequel is at least as good as the first book in a series? I know I do. I’m so incredibly happy to say that Amanda delivers in the best of ways and has managed to outshine the already perfect read that Nightchaser is.

Everything’s present that I could’ve wished for in this sequel;

About the Book

Captain Tess Bailey and Shade Ganavan are still the galaxy’s Most Wanted, and with revolution in the wind and the universe on the brink of catastrophic war, the situation couldn’t be more desperate. Despite the Dark Watch scouring the known sectors for them, rebel leaders have handed the crew of the Endeavor a delicate and dangerous mission: break into Starbase 12 and free renowned scientist Reena Ahern. She’s the only one who stands a chance of tipping the odds in their favor for the first time in decades.

The clock is ticking. But as their attraction builds and secrets are revealed, Tess and Shade must decide if they trust each other enough to execute this impossible prison break. They could change the course of history, but they’ll be risking everything… They’ll just have to tackle one crisis at a time.

My Thoughts

We pick up not long after where we left off in Nightchaser. Tess and her crew, of which Shade is now a part of, try to keep their Rebel activities going by continuing providing people in need with safety, medicine and food whenever they can. On top of that, they get an ‘impossible to achieve’ task set upon them by the Rebel leaders; break into Starbase 12 and free renowned scientist Reena Ahern. She’s the only one who stands a chance of tipping the odds in their favor for the first time in decades. In trying to accomplish their task, we visit worlds and new settings beyond the imagination and it was just awesome to explore them through Amanda’s vividly engaging writing.

❝Break into Starbase 12. Bring Reena back to me. She’ll save Demeter Terre, and the Outer Zones will be free again.❞

I fell in love with Tess in book 1 because she’s such a feisty and at the same time, loving character. I love how selfless she is and how caring towards not only ‘her own’ people, but how she goes above and beyond to anyone who’s in need of help < I wish and love to think that if I’d be in a similar situation, that I could be like Tess. She’s such a inspiring person without trying to, with ‘just being her’. So yes, all of those amazing character traits of Tess that we got familiar with in Nightchaser, are present here as well but Amanda was able to give her character even more depth I think by adding something new to the story and Tess’ character; More background story of Tess and a very personal discovery about her background that tilts her whole world upside down.

But I have to say that it was also really refreshing to follow it all through Shades eyes as well, yet again, seeing he isn’t accustomed to life as a ‘Nightchaser’, as a Rebel, something that comes so natural to Tess; this way of life. I really loved his character development and seeing how he had trouble coping with some things, and how he had to find his way in this group of fantastic and intersting characters. Shade’s the perfect supportive swoon worthy hero and I want ONE. Lol, so I’m happily married and have my own Shade right here, but still < 100% CRUSH MATERIAL and I swooned big time.

“You unlocked me.” I picked up her left hand and placed it flat over my heart. “Just like you open doors, you opened a new life for me. I’d impirsoned myself in a situation I hated more and more every day, but I didn’t see any wat out of it. You broke me out. You freed me, just like you free books, and food, and cure-alls for people who need them and are denied that precious resource.” Tess’s fingers pressed against my chest. “Because you’re the strongest, bravest, most resourceful person I know.”

Gosh, and how I just love these two characters being together! I love how the romance element was explored and developed in this one, perfectly in balance with the rest of the story. Their relationship is still new and fragile, seeing how Shade has damaged the trust Tess had in him, but chemistry and growing love can’t be denied. It’s sweet, angsty, sexy and explosive in all the ways you want it to! *starts fanning herself*

“You know what quarks do when they’re together?”
We stood toe-to-toe. I draped my arms around his neck.
“I’m afraid I missed that lesson. Mareeka was always making me clean the air ducts on Starway 8 because I kept skipping out on math and sciences.”
“Quarks latch on to one another.” Shade tugged us even cloers, demonstrating. I angled my hips forward, warmth spreading through me. He pressed back a little. “And the harder you try to separate them, the harder they hold on to each other,”
I looked at him through my lashes. “Are you asking me to be your quark, Shade Ganavan?” “Baby, you’re my quark and then some.” He dipped his head and kissed me.

The minor characters are at least as funny, lovable, and interesting as the main ones. Amanda’s group of characters always has me wanting to be a part of their world so incredibly much. I would’ve loved being a part of Griffin’s Beta Team, but also being able to go on dangerous space adventures with Tess and her crew? Yes please!! I love the attention Amanda gives to them as well. Like…Jax and Fiona?! They give me all the Flynn and Jacosta feels and I NEED THIS SHIP TO HAPPEN. And I also really love how we get more insight into morally grey and villainious characters in this book and of course: there’s BONK! I’m such a softy when it comes to animals and I love animals being present in books.

I called to him, my arms outstretched. I couldn’t quite reach him. “Come on, Bonk. Come closer.”His chin lifted, showing off the white fluff on the underside of his beck. Greenish-yellow eyes stared at me, unblinking. “What’s wrong with him?” I felt dangerously close to bursting into tears, which was insane. I’d been elated two seconds ago. “Has he forgotten me?”
“In three days?” Shade shook his head. “Unlikely. But hell hath no fure like a feline abandoned.”
Bonk looked down his whiskers at me. “I didn’t abandon you,” I told him. “He’ll realize that soon.” Shade came over but didn’t try to pat Bonk like I had. “He’s expressing his ire. By tonight, he’ll be sprawled across your pillow, purring his little heart out.”

Amanda’s writing had me on the edge of the seat the entire frigging read. She combines the most beautifully engaging writing; a perfect balance of adrenaline and emotion that got its hooks in me, held on tight and never lets go anymore. I was yet again completely emerged in this world, and loved fighting alongside Tess, Share and all the other wonderful characters. I loved being part of their group again.

Gosh, it’s just really hard to find words to describe a book that you so thoroughly loved. I want to do this book justice with a good review, but have a feeling that I’ve only been rambling haha. I wish I was able to form beautifully written sentences about this reading experience haha; my vocabulary as not being born and raised English speaking/writing just can’t keep up with people who’ve talked and written English their entire lives, lol. But ah well, I try my best and that’s all anyone can do, right? haha But seriously… If you liked (although I hope you LOVED) Nightchaser, you are going to get HOOKED and ADDICTED and hearts-eyed over starbreaker. This sequel is a sequel that every readers hopes for to get when a 2nd installment comes out; to be better than the first one < which is a rare occurence. With Nightchaser already being a fantastic 5 star read, I’m a bit at a loss here, seeing I can’t give more than 5 stars. But if I could, I would! I’m awestruck, truly.

This is te battle of every man, woman, and child. This is the battle of our lifetime. Resist! Stand up and say No before your voice is lost- and all others are crushed also.

Every chapter, every page really, was a page turner and I was seated on the edge of my seat the entire time and couldn’t wait to find out what was going to happen next. Amanda is truly one of the best when it comes to writing engaging stories > HOOK.LINE.SINKER. Her writing and stories: they grab hold of you and suck you right in and make you forget about your own world out here < a reading experience every reader is looking for when starting a new book. It felt like I was right there on Tess and Shade’s shoulder and I loved getting a front row experience of everything that happened to them. Things are getting intense in the overall scheme of it and Wow, am I excited to see what’s going to happen next.

I had this review planned to being published sooner, but this all worked out better in the end I think because now… Now, Starbreaker has released and you’re able to get a copy yourself right away, if you hadn’t bought or planned to buy it already. Can’t waaaaaait to hear from you all what you think about this fantastic book when you’ve finished reading it. If you’re going to enjoy it for even at least a small amount of what I experienced while reading it, this is going to bring you one hell of a fantastic reading experience. All there’s left to say: ENJOY, ENJOY, ENJOY! And of course, as always, thank you for reading!

With Love, Melissa

*I was generously and kindly gifted an ARC of this book. My thoughts on this book are 100% my own and not influenced by the fact that I got an early and free reader copy*
